Meta Reaches $18 Billion Settlement Over Children's Social Media Safety

Meta Platforms Inc. has reached an $18 billion legal settlement with 52 U.S. attorneys general to resolve claims that the company designed Facebook and Instagram to be addictive to children and misled the public about their safety. Under the terms of the agreement, Meta denies any wrongdoing. The settlement requires the company to implement several changes to its platforms for users under 18 in the U.S. including a default two hour daily limit and blocked access overnight unless a parent modifies the settings. Additionally, notifications will be muted during school hours and the platforms will provide users with alerts regarding their screen time. The financial terms of the settlement involve payments spread over a decade. Approximately one third of the total amount is contingent upon other big tech firms, specifically TikTok and YouTube, introducing similar restrictions and making matching payments. Meta is publicly calling on those companies to join the agreement. The settlement follows a separate legal loss in New Mexico where a judge ordered Meta to pay $942 million and overhaul child protections, a decision the company is appealing.
