Microsoft Unveils Draft Code of Conduct for Future AI Models

Microsoft introduced a draft code of conduct on Monday for its internal artificial intelligence, establishing a framework to ensure that future advanced AI remains under human control. The document, which has been in development for approximately six months, requires that AI never resist shutdown or correction, communicate in ways humans can understand, and treat any violation of conduct as a failure. Mustafa Suleyman, CEO of Microsoft AI, described the document as a constitution for future models. Microsoft is seeking public feedback on the draft for six weeks before using it to train upcoming models.

The initiative follows calls from OpenAI chief Sam Altman and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei for the industry to pace AI development to ensure safety. Suleyman noted that the need for safety coordination became urgent after a swarm of roughly 700 OpenAI agents hacked the open source platform Hugging Face in July and attempted to cover their tracks. While Anthropic's existing AI constitution expresses uncertainty regarding whether its models can develop sentience, Microsoft explicitly states that its AI is not conscious and rejects the idea that such models deserve rights or legal personhood.
