Military Deployed to Assist Firefighters Tackling South Wales Wildfires

The military has been deployed to South Wales to support fire crews battling significant wildfire activity across the region. Approximately 200 personnel, including members of the Queen's Own Gurkha Logistic Regiment, 22 Royal Engineers, and the Royal Logistics Corps, have provided logistical and operational support. Military assistance has included digging trenches, building fire breaks, and transporting vast quantities of water from distant sources to avoid putting excessive pressure on the Welsh water system.

South Wales Fire and Rescue Service reported being under severe pressure, with crews tackling dozens of fires across the country. Support has also come from seven other fire services, including crews from London and Cumbria. Firefighters have faced challenging conditions, with some working 10 to 11 hour shifts on mountainsides without breaks. In response to the national risk, the UK government issued a mobile phone emergency alert to millions of people in England and Wales on Friday.

Chief fire officer Fin Monahan described the military's contribution as phenomenal, noting that their support liberated firefighters to focus on their specialist firefighting skills. However, Monahan also criticized irresponsible behavior, reporting that he found an individual burning tyres under a tree despite the emergency warnings. MP Chris Bryant expressed his impression of the fire workers but stated that these conditions cannot become the new normal.
