Milo Yiannopoulos was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on Thursday at the Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport in Kenner, Louisiana. According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Yiannopoulos entered the United States legally on May 14, 2019, but overstayed his visa. A judge issued a final order of removal on July 22 after he failed to appear at an immigration hearing. He remains in federal custody pending his removal.
Both reports describe Yiannopoulos as a figure associated with the far right. He previously worked as a senior editor for Breitbart News and was a supporter of Donald Trump during the 2016 presidential campaign. He is known for controversial public speaking and writings regarding Islam, feminism, and transgender people. While he previously identified as gay, he has recently stated that he no longer identifies as such.
Following the arrest, Laura Loomer, a Trump ally and former associate of Yiannopoulos, claimed on X that she had reported him to the FBI and ICE. There is currently no indication that her report was connected to the arrest. It remains unclear how Yiannopoulos operated in the U.S. prior to 2019, though he stated in 2017 that he held an O-1 visa for immigrants of extraordinary ability.
