- A hatched block means the outlet is affiliated with, or controlled by, a state.
Political lean describes where an outlet sits within the politics of its own country. It is never a position on a single global scale.
Political lean is comparable inside one country and not across them, which is why the bar groups by country first. Publicly funded broadcasters are not marked as state-linked.
The owner of each outlet is listed as a matter of record, not as a judgement about the outlet.
Paris based AI startup Mistral has raised 3 billion euros in a Series D funding round, resulting in a post money valuation of approximately 21 billion euros. This represents the largest equity fundraising round ever completed by a European technology company. The latest round was led by Samsung Electronics, the EU backed Scaleup Europe Fund, and PSG Equity, with participation from Nvidia and other existing investors. Mistral intends to use the capital to expand its frontier research, develop infrastructure, and accelerate international commercial growth.
Mistral is positioning itself as a sovereign alternative to United States giants like OpenAI and Anthropic. The company argues that governments and organizations now prioritize maintaining control over their infrastructure and intelligence loops for mission critical needs. To address this, Mistral is pursuing a full stack approach that combines open weight models, infrastructure, and compute capacity. This strategy aims to reduce client dependence on a single overseas provider. The company's growth has been rapid, having previously raised 1.7 billion euros a year ago at a valuation of 11.7 billion euros.
While Mistral is a dominant player in Europe, it remains significantly smaller than its American competitors. For comparison, OpenAI closed a round in March with 122 billion dollars in committed capital and a valuation of 852 billion dollars. Mistral's growth has been partially supported by European concerns regarding reliance on overseas technology, which were heightened when the US administration briefly imposed export restrictions on Anthropic in June.
