NATO and Allies Warn of Prolonged Conflict as Russia Strikes Kyiv

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and other officials have called for increased support for Ukraine, warning that the conflict with Russia is likely to be prolonged. During a meeting of defense ministers, Rutte stated that nations must deepen their support to allow Ukraine to reinforce its air defenses and capitalize on opportunities across various fronts. Elbridge Colby, a Pentagon policy official, added that the world must be prepared for the conflict to persist for months and years, despite peace efforts from the administration of President Donald Trump. Bloomberg reports that European and US officials see the war potentially continuing into 2027, noting that recent American peace initiatives made no progress with President Vladimir Putin.

Ukraine is currently attempting to procure approximately one thousand Patriot air defense missiles with the help of allies and a European Union loan. Ukrainian Defense Minister Yevhenii Khmara noted that most of these missiles will not arrive for several years and urged allies to accelerate the process. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha also called for more interceptors, stating that current stocks are critically low.

These warnings follow a series of Russian attacks on Kyiv. On Tuesday, drones and missiles struck the capital, killing two people and wounding ten others. The attacks damaged at least 14 high rise buildings, a school, a clinic, and a dormitory. The Russian Defense Ministry stated that it targeted military and logistical sites in Kyiv and the port of Chornomorsk. Ukrainian officials noted that these strikes resumed shortly after US peace envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff departed Kyiv. In response to the volatility, Poland activated aircraft for preventive operations against potential Russian missile strikes.
