Netflix Donates 600 Million Pesos to Colombian Audiovisual Sector Following Earthquake

Netflix has donated 600 million Colombian pesos, approximately 186,000 dollars, to support professionals in the Colombian audiovisual sector affected by a recent earthquake. The funds will be administered by the Colombian Academy of Cinema and the Colombian Association of Independent Film and Audiovisual Producers (ASOCINDE). To identify the specific needs and affected individuals, the two organizations will conduct a census before distributing the aid.

Ana María Londoño, the Director of Content for Netflix Colombia, stated that the company wanted to act quickly alongside organizations that understand the sector's needs. In addition to the corporate donation, Netflix announced it will triple employee contributions to earthquake related charities through its donation program. The earthquake, which occurred on August 10 with a magnitude of 7.4, resulted in 331 deaths, 4,449 injuries, and at least 406,963 displaced people.

Further support initiatives include the International Audiovisual Solidarity Fund, launched by the Colombian Academy of Cinema and the Ibero American Federation of Film Academies and Sciences (FIACINE). ASOCINDE also created the Audiovisual Assistance and Reactivation Fund to help recover the human and cultural fabric of the industry. Elkin Zair, executive director of the Colombian Academy of Cinema, praised the professionals who provided equipment and expertise for search and rescue operations.

Minister of Culture Paola Holguín thanked Netflix for the contribution. She noted that the gesture demonstrates the fundamental role of the private sector in the country's recovery and development.
