- A hatched block means the outlet is affiliated with, or controlled by, a state.
Political lean describes where an outlet sits within the politics of its own country. It is never a position on a single global scale.
Political lean is comparable inside one country and not across them, which is why the bar groups by country first. Publicly funded broadcasters are not marked as state-linked.
The owner of each outlet is listed as a matter of record, not as a judgement about the outlet.
New York City has released over 170,000 pages of documents revealing that the air quality in Lower Manhattan following the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks was significantly more hazardous than officials claimed at the time. The released files, which include 68 boxes of reports and the Harding Memorandum, show that asbestos and other toxins remained in the air ten months after the destruction of the World Trade Center. At the time, then Mayor Rudy Giuliani and EPA head Christine Todd Whitman had assured the public that the air was safe to breathe.
The health impact of the toxic dust has been extensive. Reports indicate that nearly 55,000 survivors and responders have been diagnosed with cancer, while over 9,000 people have died from illnesses linked to the inhalation of the dust. The debris consisted of a complex mixture of over 350 chemical agents, including pulverized cement, glass, plastics, and metals such as lead and cadmium. Experts note that these fine particles can penetrate deep into the lungs and persist in the body for decades.
Outlets with a center right lean focused on the official documentation of the city's knowledge and the specific legal concerns regarding potential lawsuits. In contrast, the center left outlet emphasized the personal narratives of affected individuals and the scientific explanation of how inorganic chemicals interact with human tissue.
