A special National Investigation Agency (NIA) court in Chhattisgarh's Bastar district has convicted 10 individuals, including two women, for their roles in the 2013 Jhiram Valley Maoist attack. The verdict was delivered by Special Judge Ajay Singh Rajput in Jagdalpur. The court has reserved the order regarding the quantum of punishment until September 16.
The attack occurred on May 25, 2013, when Maoists ambushed the Congress party's Parivartan Rally on a national highway. The ambush resulted in the deaths of 29 people, including civilians, security personnel, and senior Congress leaders such as former state chief Nand Kumar Patel, his son Dinesh, former leader of Opposition Mahendra Karma, former Union minister Vidya Charan Shukla, and former MLA Uday Mudliyar. Then chief minister Amit Jogi survived the attack with injuries.
During the trial, the court recorded statements from 101 witnesses. The convicted individuals are Pramila Modiyam, Chaitu Lekam, Sumitra Punem Modiyam, Mukka Mandavi, Kosa Kavasi, Aayata Markam, Madkami Deva, Joga Madkami, Banjami Sanna, and Mahadev Nag. Trial proceedings had originally been initiated against 11 arrested accused, but one died during the proceedings.
Defense lawyer Arvind Choudhary stated that the defense will appeal the verdict in the high court. Additionally, Guddu Kavasi, the brother of convict Kosa Kavasi, claimed that his brother and Mukka Mandavi were falsely implicated and were preparing for family weddings at the time of the attack.
