Oil Spills Threaten Gulf Waters and Omani Coastline

A series of oil spills are threatening the environment in the Gulf and off the coast of Oman. A grounded tanker, the Caroline Bezengi, is leaking Russian crude oil in a protected marine area off Oman. Some estimates place the resulting slick at 2,000 square kilometers. The vessel, which was carrying nearly 800,000 barrels of oil, is partially submerged near Qabiliyah Island. Oman's Environment Authority reported that the oil has reached the coasts of Ras Madrakah, and it may extend further north to Masirah Island. One source identifies the Caroline Bezengi as part of a Russian shadow fleet.

Separately, two additional slicks have appeared in Iranian waters. One is located off the southern tip of Qeshm Island, and another is near Sirri Island. Satellite imagery and video verified by Reuters show a dark liquid washing ashore on the beaches of Suza on Qeshm Island. Experts suggest the Qeshm Island slick likely originated from the Minoan Pioneer, a Liberia flagged dry bulk ship. The Minoan Pioneer was reportedly hit by an unknown projectile on August 3 in a suspected Iranian attack. An Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson stated that preliminary evidence indicates a foreign bulk carrier is the source of the pollution.

Regional conflict has complicated cleanup and assessment efforts. A source involved in the salvage of the Minoan Pioneer stated that a tugboat was unable to approach the vessel due to permission issues with Iranian authorities. While the spills in the Gulf are linked to regional tensions, reports indicate the Caroline Bezengi incident is not connected to the Iran war.
