One person has died and 72 others were rescued from a small boat attempting to reach the UK from France. The French coastguard monitored the vessel in the Gravelines area overnight from Thursday to Friday. Rescuers found one person requiring CPR who was later pronounced dead, while three others were found injured, including one person requiring urgent medical care.
The incident followed the arrival of 494 migrants in the UK on Thursday, marking the first successful crossings in 10 days. According to Press Association analysis of Government data, the total number of migrants crossing the Channel this year is down 43 percent compared to the same time last year. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood stated she will not be complacent about these falling numbers and has boosted enforcement on French beaches and overseas.
Government figures from June show that 16,000 asylum seekers were living in Home Office hotels, a 50 percent decrease from the previous year. The Home Office is currently closing hotels in favor of larger sites, such as former military barracks, and houses of multiple occupancy. There are now fewer than 160 hotels in use, down from a peak of nearly 400 under the previous Conservative government.
