A study by the Instituto Reúna reveals that only 49 out of 191 government plans submitted to the Electoral Court by state candidates mention at least one public policy for mathematics learning. This represents 25 percent of the total plans analyzed. The survey found that every one of the 27 states has at least one candidate who includes the subject in their platform. Proposed measures include the diagnosis of student knowledge, proficiency, and the recomposition of learning.
Laura Angélica, the coordinator of articulation and advocacy at Instituto Reúna, stated that while mathematics learning is not a common theme across all candidacies, it has become a strategic issue in a relevant portion of educational projects. She noted that this systematic analysis helps determine how mathematics enters the political agenda and reduces reliance on campaign promises that are difficult to verify.
These findings come amid the National Education Plan (PNE) 2026 to 2036, which mandates that initial mathematics learning receive the same weight and timeframe as Portuguese literacy. The goal of the PNE is to ensure that by 2036, no fifth grade elementary school student remains below the basic level in mathematics.
