OpenAI has announced the resolution of the Navier-Stokes existence and smoothness problem, one of seven Millennium Prize Problems established by the Clay Mathematics Institute in 2000. The problem concerns the mathematical behavior of equations that describe the movement of viscous fluids, such as air and water. OpenAI's solution, which spans 166 pages, concludes that singularities can occur: this means that within the mathematical framework of the equations, it is possible for variables like velocity to reach infinite values in finite time, even though such a phenomenon is physically impossible for real molecules. The company utilized a new AI model and a system of 10,000 agents to reach the result. According to the rules of the Clay Institute, the solution must now undergo peer review and be published in a scientific journal before the one million dollar prize can be awarded, although OpenAI has stated it does not intend to claim the money. Some experts, including Roberto Natalini of the National Research Council, suggest the AI may have synthesized existing human ideas and warn that this could discourage researchers from sharing partial results online for fear of AI appropriation. Others note that the proof contains highly synthesized steps that may lack transparency.
