The parents of Caleb Vazquez, one of two teenagers who killed three people at a San Diego mosque on May 18, have filed a lawsuit against Park Mental Health Treatment of San Diego. The lawsuit alleges that the facility failed to intervene despite warnings from the FBI that Vazquez was making concerning comments about school shootings on the dark web. According to the filings, the FBI contacted Vazquez's mother on May 14, and she subsequently notified the facility's staff and a program director. The mother claims the center failed to act with necessary speed or move her son to a higher security facility despite signs of imminent threat.
On the morning of the shooting, facility employees notified the parents that Vazquez was missing. Surveillance footage showed he had left the property at 8:24 p.m. the previous evening. While the parents searched for him, another teenager, 17 year old Cain Clark, was reported missing by his mother, who noted that firearms were missing from her home and she had found hate filled writings. Vazquez and Clark killed three men, including security guard Amin Abdullah, Mansour Kaziha, and Nader Awad, before taking their own lives in a nearby vehicle.
Records indicate a history of alarming behavior. In January, Vazquez was hospitalized after telling classmates he wanted to carry out a school shooting. A year prior, police confiscated 26 guns from his father after Vazquez was flagged for idolizing Nazis. Park Mental Health disputed the lawsuit, stating that the facility is not responsible for the actions of the shooters. The FBI declined to comment on the matter.
