Peru Justice Annuls 15 Year Sentence for Former First Lady Nadine Heredia

The National Superior Court of Peru annulled a 15 year prison sentence for former first lady Nadine Heredia on Thursday. Heredia had been charged with money laundering involving funds for the Peruvian Nationalist Party. The court also ordered the definitive archiving of the case and the lifting of arrest warrants against her. This decision extends the effects of a recent Constitutional Court ruling that freed her husband, former president Ollanta Humala. The couple was convicted in April 2025 for allegedly receiving illegal contributions from the Venezuelan government and the Brazilian construction firm Odebrecht during the 2006 and 2011 presidential campaigns. The ruling also benefits eight other defendants whose accusations stemmed from the same Public Ministry process. Heredia currently resides in Brazil with her son after being granted political asylum. Her legal team, including Leonardo Massud and Marco Aurélio de Carvalho, stated that the asylum was necessary due to political persecution and judicial harassment in Peru. Despite the annulment, her defense advises her to remain in Brazil because two other investigations remain active and they believe she cannot yet return to Peru safely.
