Jackson police announced that additional arrests are expected following the death of Tasia Fortune, a 29 year old Black woman found hanging from a tree in the backyard of an abandoned home on August 3. Authorities arrested Jarques Ratliff, 51, on a homicide charge after the state medical examiner's office determined the death was a homicide. Police Chief RaShall Brackney stated that Ratliff had an association with Fortune, though she did not elaborate on the nature of their relationship. Brackney noted that the investigation remains active and that the arrest is an important development but not the conclusion of the case.
Fortune's mother, Christy Spivey, expressed shock and disbelief over the death, stating that her daughter would not have killed herself. Spivey noted that police have not yet shared a motive or confirmed if DNA evidence led to the arrest. According to an obituary, Fortune was a mother of four and a former star cross country runner who had lived in Jackson for 10 years after spending time in foster care and group homes. Services for Fortune were held last month in Kentucky.
