Hampshire Police have released images of six men they wish to identify following violent disorder at an anti-migrant protest in Portsmouth. The incident occurred on Sunday, September 6, at Eastney Marina after a small boat carrying asylum seekers arrived from across the Channel. Approximately 200 people gathered at the scene, resulting in seven police officers being treated for injuries. Damage was also reported to vehicles belonging to the Border Force and the Coastguard.
Assistant Chief Constable Tony Rowlinson stated that the events were not a peaceful protest but rather violent public disorder. He noted that arrests are not always possible at the time of an event and that police have since reviewed hundreds of hours of footage to identify suspects. A 42 year old man from Paulsgrove has been charged with violent disorder and assaulting a police constable, while a 16 year old boy was arrested and released on bail.
Further tensions occurred in Portsmouth city centre on Saturday when anti-immigration protesters and anti-racism demonstrators clashed. Police formed a line to separate the groups in Guildhall Square. During this event, a 76 year old man was arrested for using an item to conceal his identity, and a 33 year old man was arrested on suspicion of criminal damage and obstructing a highway.
