President Abelardo de la Espriella Orders Investigation and Possible Transfer of Kiko Gómez Following Threats to Judiciary

President Abelardo de la Espriella has ordered an investigation and the possible transfer of former La Guajira governor Juan Francisco "Kiko" Gómez from his prison in La Dorada. The decision follows reports of threats against magistrates of the Supreme Court of Justice and officials from the Procuraduría General de la Nación. During a meeting with the Supreme Court, the president confirmed that a cell inspection conducted with the National Penitentiary and Prison Institute (Inpec) uncovered a cellular phone in Gómez's possession.

The security concerns were highlighted by Magistrate José Joaquín Urbano, who warned that Gómez might be behind an attack on the 26th floor of the Procuraduría building, where a broken window and a fired bullet were discovered. Urbano noted that several individuals involved in Gómez's legal processes had expressed fear for their safety. Gómez is currently serving a 55 year sentence for homicide and was recently sentenced to an additional 31 years for the 1997 murder of councilman Luis Gregorio López.

In response to the threats, President de la Espriella stated that anyone who rises against the Court rises against the government and will face the full weight of the law. Magistrate Iván Mauricio Lenis, president of the Supreme Court, announced that security at the Palacio de Justicia would be reinforced by the Police and the National Protection Unit. Meanwhile, Juan Felipe Criollo Figueroa, the lawyer for Kiko Gómez, issued a statement categorically rejecting and repudiating the events, asserting that his client is unrelated to the incidents.
