President Trump Honors 9/11 First Responders Amid Dispute Over Personal Account

President Donald Trump held an event at the White House Ellipse on Tuesday to honor emergency personnel killed in the September 11, 2001, attacks. During the ceremony, which featured a steel beam recovered from the World Trade Center's South Tower, Trump posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom to Welles Crowther, a volunteer firefighter known as the man in the red bandana. Trump also praised Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, whose firm lost over 650 employees in the attacks.

During the event, Trump recounted a story in which two firefighters bodily lifted him to safety because they feared a building was coming down on top of them. While center right coverage focused on the tribute to victims and the display of the steel beam, center and center left reports highlighted discrepancies in Trump's narrative. CNN reported that Trump was miles away at Trump Tower during the attacks and noted a lack of public evidence that he was inside the US Steel building in the days following. Trump later clarified on Truth Social that he was not there on the day of the collapse but shortly thereafter.

The event also included political commentary. Trump warned against a communistic way of thinking, a reference to the Democratic Party, and discussed the administration's efforts to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon.

Trump will not be in New York City for the 25th anniversary commemorations on Friday. Instead, he will attend an event at the Pentagon. Trump and the White House have denied reports that his absence from New York is due to being barred from speaking at the memorial. Following the Friday events, Trump is scheduled to travel to Ireland for a golf tournament at his family's course.
