The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party and the sister of former Prime Minister Imran Khan have filed contempt petitions against the Pakistani government following a dispute over the jailed leader's medical transfer. The legal actions follow a Supreme Court order from August 18 that directed authorities to move Imran Khan from Adiala jail to the private Shifa International Hospital for a medical examination. Instead, authorities took him to the state run Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) for a brief check up before returning him to jail.
Dr. Uzma Khan, the sister of the former premier, named several respondents in her petition, including Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Information Minister Attaullah Tarar. The petition argues that the government's actions constitute a wilful and deliberate violation of a binding court order. PTI officials stated that the party is seeking action against top government ministers and demanding that Khan be treated at the private facility originally ordered by the court.
Information Minister Attaullah Tarar defended the government's actions, stating that the medical evaluation was conducted transparently and that the move to PIMS was necessary due to security risks at Shifa International Hospital. He asserted that the government fulfilled its obligations and accused the PTI of using health issues for political gain. Tarar further claimed that the PTI and Imran Khan's family were the ones in contempt for gathering supporters and issuing political statements.
Eight members of the Pakistan Bar Council issued a statement condemning the government's disregard for the judiciary, calling the incident a serious assault on the independence of the courts. However, the Vice Chairman of the Pakistan Bar Council clarified that these views represented individual members and not the collective position of the council.
