Dutch racing driver Loek Hartog saved the life of British driver Ollie Millroy by pulling him from a burning Ferrari during a China GT Championship race in Shanghai on Saturday. Millroy was involved in a multi car crash that caused his vehicle to erupt in flames. Hartog stopped his own car and used a fire extinguisher before dragging Millroy to safety. Millroy suffered five broken ribs, a broken collarbone, a broken hand and finger, and a bruised lung.
Millroy described Hartog as a superhero on social media, noting that the rescue occurred before fire crews or flag marshals were in sight. Hartog stated that he acted instinctively and that there was no moment of doubt despite the terrifying nature of the scene.
Millroy's team, AAI Motorsport, criticized the safety standards at the circuit and stated they would no longer participate in races organized by China GT. The team claimed the car burned for over a minute without timely firefighting or rescue operations. The China GT Championship organizing committee apologized for the accident and stated they would conduct a thorough review to address shortcomings in emergency response and medical support.
