Record Rainfall Causes Flooding and Deaths in Japan

Record breaking rainfall east of Tokyo has left at least five to eight people dead and thousands of travelers stranded. The deluge hit Chiba Prefecture during one of Japan's busiest holiday weeks, with some areas receiving more than 360 mm of rain in 24 hours. The Japan Meteorological Agency reported that precipitation reached 100 mm per hour in some locations, leading to submerged roads, flooded homes, and muddy water covering railway tracks.

Transport disruptions were severe, particularly at Narita Airport where approximately 7,000 people were stranded overnight. Airport staff provided sleeping bags and snacks to passengers while the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force dispatched buses to assist 4,000 people stuck at Soga train station. Power outages affected between 18,000 and 68,000 homes depending on the timing of the report.

Casualties included a man found on a flooded road in Ichikawa City and a woman trapped in a car in Sakura. While the center and center right reports focus on the death toll of eight, the center left report specifies at least five deaths and notes that two others were presumed dead. In response to the weather, Tigerair Taiwan offered rebooking or refunds for affected passengers, while other airlines reported minimal disruptions.
