Temporary head coach Robert Moreno arrived in South Korea on Sunday to take over the men's national football team. The 48 year old Spanish tactician, who previously coached the Spanish national team and served as an assistant for FC Barcelona, was appointed by the Korea Football Association (KFA) on an interim basis. Moreno and his staff are signed through November 27 and will lead the team through six international friendlies, including matches against Ecuador, Uruguay, Venezuela, and Uzbekistan.
The KFA appointed Moreno following the resignation of Hong Myung bo in June, who stepped down after the team's group stage exit at the FIFA World Cup. While Moreno is currently in a short term role, the KFA stated that he may be allowed to remain for the Asian Football Confederation Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia in January, depending on the team's performance over the next two months.
Speaking to reporters at Incheon International Airport, Moreno expressed that leading the team is a huge honor and that he has wanted the position for years. He stated his intention to mold the squad into a better unit and make the public proud of the team. Regarding the World Cup exit, Moreno described it as a heartbreaking situation but emphasized the need to move forward. Moreno is scheduled to hold a press conference on Monday at Korea Football Park in Cheonan to announce his squad for the upcoming matches.
