Russia launched a large scale missile and drone attack on Kyiv and the surrounding region early Tuesday, September 8, marking the end of a three day suspension of strikes on the respective capitals. Local officials report that at least two people were killed and between seven and ten others were injured. The strikes caused fires and damage to residential buildings, including a five story block in the Solomianskyi district, as well as a school, warehouses, and vehicles. The Kyiv City Military Administration and Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed that ballistic missiles and jet powered drones were used in the assault, which also hit the Boryspil and Fastiv districts on the outskirts of the capital.
The truce was established to facilitate a visit by US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, who met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Kyiv over the weekend. While the envoys discussed possible solutions to end the conflict, no tangible breakthrough was announced. Following the attacks on Kyiv, Russian regional Governor Roman Busargin reported that a Ukrainian drone attack hit civilian infrastructure in the Russian city of Saratov, resulting in several injuries.
In separate developments, Ukrainian Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko announced his resignation on Monday. His departure follows raids by anti corruption agencies investigating a network allegedly involved in bribery and money laundering, though Kravchenko denied the allegations and described his resignation as a political decision.
