Russia Strikes Ukraine Poland Border as Peace Talks Stall Over Territory

Russian drone attacks targeted a border crossing between Ukraine and Poland, hitting a gas station in Yahodyn and a passenger train locomotive headed for Warsaw. Ukrainian officials reported that the train was struck two kilometers from the border in the Volyn region, though no injuries were recorded because crew members had been warned. President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that Russia deliberately targeted the locomotive and gas station as part of a broader campaign that included strikes on energy plants, residential buildings, and commercial sites in Odessa and the Khmelnytskyi region. The Russian Ministry of Defense claimed the strikes targeted railway infrastructure used to transport military goods from European countries. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha described the attacks as Russian terror knocking on the doors of the EU and NATO, calling for a total trade embargo and complete sanctions against the Russian military industrial complex.

Simultaneously, diplomatic efforts to end the conflict remain deadlocked over territorial disputes. Jared Kushner, an envoy for U.S. President Donald Trump, stated at the Yalta European Strategy conference that Ukraine is currently unwilling to cede territory in the Donbas, a condition outlined by President Vladimir Putin. While the Kremlin demands the surrender of these regions, Ukraine has called for a ceasefire along the current front line and requested Western security guarantees. Kushner noted that the U.S. is seeking a creative solution to protect Ukrainian interests while persuading Russia to end the war. Despite an agreement to resume trilateral negotiations between Ukraine, the U.S. and Russia, President Zelensky told reporters he expects the war to continue into the winter months.
