A Russian drone struck the headquarters of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) in central Kyiv on Friday, September 4. President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that the drone targeted the office of SBU acting chief Oleksandr Poklad, who was not in his office at the time of the attack. Emergency services responded to the scene where thick black smoke was reported rising from the building. The strike occurred on Volodymyrska Street, located across from the UNESCO listed Saint Sophia Cathedral.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha described the attack as a major escalation and stated that it demonstrates Moscow's rejection of diplomacy. This statement followed reports that US special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner were planning visits to Moscow and Kyiv over the weekend to discuss a potential peace agreement.
Several reports highlighted the technical nature of the attack, noting that Russia has increasingly used jet powered drones that fly at speeds up to 500 or 600 kilometers per hour. These drones are more difficult to intercept than previous models, which some sources suggest indicates a critical shortage of interceptor missiles and air defenses in Ukraine.
