Satya Niketan Building Collapse Sparks Safety Concerns and Political Demands

A five storey building named Hostel Daze collapsed in the Satya Niketan student hub of south Delhi on September 6, resulting in several casualties. Reports on the death toll vary, with one source stating seven people died, including a labourer, while another reports five students were killed. Twelve people were rescued and five others remain hospitalized. The building, which served as a paying guest accommodation for 35 to 40 students, had been extended from its original structure with unauthorized changes to the basement and ground floor. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) stated the building had no sanctioned plan, occupancy certificate, or fire no objection certificate.

Immediate rescue efforts were led by students and local residents who broke through concrete slabs by hand before the Delhi Fire Service arrived. Fire personnel faced delays reaching the site due to the narrow lanes of the neighborhood. This incident follows a 2022 collapse of another three storey building in the same area that killed two labourers.

The tragedy has become a central issue for the upcoming Delhi University Students Union (DUSU) elections on September 18. Rival student organizations, including the ABVP, NSUI, and the AISA SFI alliance, are demanding more official university housing. Data indicates a chronic shortage of accommodation, with only 7,224 official hostel beds available for a student population where more than half are estimated to require housing. The ABVP has called for the resignation of the MCD commissioner and a safety audit of student accommodations. The NSUI is demanding 1 crore rupees in compensation for the victims' families and increased on campus housing.
