Seven Dead in Delhi Student PG Collapse; High Court Orders Citywide Inspections

At least seven people, including five students and two laborers, died after a five storey building housing a boys paying guest accommodation collapsed in the Satya Niketan area of South West Delhi on Sunday. Rescue operations concluded on Monday evening after the National Disaster Response Force and other agencies cleared the debris. Three people remain in critical condition at AIIMS Trauma Centre. The collapsed structure, known as Hostel Daze, was built in the 1990s and reportedly had four floors constructed illegally. Initial investigations suggest that repair work in the basement to address waterlogging may have contributed to the collapse.

Police arrested the property owner, 81 year old Hariram Gupta, his wife Urmila Gupta, and their son Mahesh Gupta. The Delhi High Court has since ordered the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to inspect all PG hostels under its jurisdiction within one week to ensure compliance with building bye laws. The court also questioned Delhi University regarding the acute shortage of official hostel facilities, which forces outstation students to rely on private PGs. In response to the tragedy, the Delhi government suspended five senior MCD officials, including the Deputy Commissioner of the South Zone, to address gaps in building enforcement.

Political and student reactions have been widespread. The ABVP, a student organization affiliated with the RSS, held protests across several Delhi University campuses demanding a high level probe and the suspension of the MCD Commissioner. The NSUI president alleged that the death toll may be higher than seven, while Rahul Gandhi described the incident as part of a shameful pattern. The MCD has also begun issuing demolition notices to other dangerous buildings in the vicinity, leading many students to vacate their accommodations in fear.
