Severe Weather and Power Outages Hit São Paulo State

Heavy rains and a cold front caused widespread disruption across São Paulo on Saturday, August 15, leaving approximately 60,000 properties without power in the Greater São Paulo area. According to data from Enel, 45,000 of those outages occurred within the capital city, with other significant impacts in Santana de Parnaíba, São Bernardo do Campo, and Jandira. The state Civil Defense issued severe alerts for heavy rain, lightning, and wind, specifically targeting the North and Central zones of the capital, as well as Caraguatatuba, Santa Branca, Biritiba Mirim, and Salesópolis. In the capital, the CGE placed the entire city on attention for flooding, with the Jabaquara and Santo Amaro neighborhoods reaching alert status due to the overflow of the Água Espraiada stream. Weather forecasts for the city indicated a maximum temperature of 25°C and persistent southeast winds, with conditions expected to improve by Sunday. While the coast and south of the state faced instability, the interior of São Paulo experienced high temperatures and low humidity. In the central region of Brazil, Inmet issued an orange alert for dangerous low humidity, with temperatures in parts of Mato Grosso, Goiás, and Tocantins reaching between 40°C and 42°C. The Brazilian Navy also issued a swell warning for the North Coast, predicting waves up to 2.5 meters high between Ilhabela and Campos dos Goytacazes.
