Severe Wildfires Impact Greece and Spain

Severe wildfires have caused significant destruction across Southern Europe, with Greece reporting the highest casualties. In Greece, a helicopter collision west of Athens killed a Danish pilot and a Greek copilot, bringing the total death toll from the country's fires to five. The blaze west of Athens remains out of control, destroying more than 10,000 hectares of forest and threatening the city of Megara. Authorities are investigating sparks from private wind farm power lines as a possible cause, and two people have been detained. International support from France and Romania is assisting Greek efforts.

In Spain, firefighting efforts have focused on various regions. A fire in the Sierra de Espadán natural park in Vall d'Uixó destroyed 3,750 hectares. Lieutenant General Francisco Javier Marcos of the UME stated that large forest fires, such as those in Ávila and Madrid which moved at 60 meters per minute, cannot be attacked and can only be defended against. While some reports highlight the intensity of these fires, a center right outlet notes that the situation in Spain has significantly relaxed compared to previous weeks, with German firefighters from North Rhine Westphalia assisting in the Castile and Leon region to extinguish remaining hotspots.
