Sinkhole at Malibu Home Reportedly Owned by Nicolas Cage Prompts Evacuations

A large sinkhole that opened on Tuesday morning at a beachfront property in Malibu, California, has led to the evacuation of more than 30 properties. The home is reportedly owned by actor Nicolas Cage, who purchased the property in 2024. Local authorities stated that the sinkhole began as a collapse of a driveway and grew to approximately 25 to 30 feet deep and 30 by 60 feet wide by Tuesday evening.

City officials declared a local emergency and red tagged 31 properties. Seven homes were flagged due to hazardous conditions, while 24 others were flagged because of a loss of safe vehicular access. A temporary shelter was established by the American Red Cross at Malibu High School. Emergency responders noted that access to the area is severely constrained because the remaining portion of the road is too narrow for fire engines and other large apparatus.

The incident also involved a gas leak, which led officials to shut off gas service to the affected area. Authorities warned that water service might also be discontinued and that conditions could worsen due to forecasted high tides, rains, and swells generated by Post-tropical Cyclone Marie. A representative for Nicolas Cage did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
