South Korea Mobilizes National Response to Record Breaking Heat Wave

President Lee Jae Myung has ordered the South Korean government to mobilize all available resources to minimize damage from a record breaking heat wave and a worsening drought. The order followed a meeting with Cabinet ministers and local government leaders where Lee urged an all out response system to protect lives and safeguard vulnerable populations, including senior citizens living alone and residents of shanty towns. He specifically called for the enforcement of rest periods at outdoor worksites and preemptive measures to ensure water supplies in the southern region.

Temperatures have reached historic levels across the country. The city of Yangsan in South Gyeongsang Province recorded 42.5 degrees Celsius on Sunday, the highest temperature ever recorded in South Korea since modern observations began in 1904. In Seoul, temperatures have neared 40 degrees Celsius, prompting the highest level heat wave warnings for the capital and surrounding provinces. Health authorities report that 21 people have died from heat related illnesses since May 15, with over 2,400 others requiring medical treatment.

The extreme weather has disrupted national activities. The Korea Baseball Organization canceled all games scheduled for August 5 and 6 after multiple spectators collapsed from heat related illnesses during previous matches. Meteorologists warn that high pressure systems may keep typhoons away from the peninsula, which could further delay relief from the heat.
