Strong Cold Front and Extratropical Cyclone to Hit Southern Brazil

A strong cold front and an extratropical cyclone are expected to bring a significant drop in temperatures and severe weather to Southern Brazil starting this week. An extratropical cyclone is forecast to hit the South by Wednesday night and Thursday morning, with the western half of Rio Grande do Sul being the most impacted. This system may bring wind gusts of up to 80 km/h and poses a risk of flooding in urban areas and small rivers, according to the State Civil Defense of Rio Grande do Sul. Following this, a powerful mass of polar air will advance, causing temperatures to plummet across the South, Southeast, and parts of the Center West. The peak of the cold is expected between Sunday and Monday, with minimum temperatures potentially reaching 0 degrees Celsius or lower in parts of Paraná and Rio Grande do Sul, and as low as minus 7 degrees Celsius in the South Plateau of Santa Catarina. In the Southeast, the temperature drop will be noticeable but less intense than in the South. For example, São Paulo is expected to see minimums around 10 to 13 degrees Celsius. This shift follows a period of intense heat and low humidity that affected much of the country's interior, including Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul.
