A new study published in the journal eGastroenterology suggests that exposure to Helicobacter pylori, a common stomach bacterium, may be linked to approximately 22 percent of bowel cancer cases worldwide. The research, co led by the University of California San Diego and the University of Hong Kong, analyzed data from 43 studies involving more than 48 million people. The findings indicate that exposure to H. pylori is associated with a 1.59 fold increased risk of colorectal cancer compared to those not exposed to the bacteria.
While H. pylori is an established cause of stomach cancer, its role in bowel cancer remains a subject of debate. The researchers noted that the 22 percent estimate is based on a causal assumption. Dr. Rosiered Brownson Smith of King's College London stated that the study uses a statistical relationship to estimate theoretical links, noting that whether a true cause and effect relationship exists remains a major unknown.
The study found varying proportions of linked cases by region and age. Mongolia and the Western Pacific showed the highest estimated proportions at 36 percent and 25 percent, respectively, while China had the highest absolute number of potentially linked cases at 139,619. Data also indicated that the proportion of associated cancers was higher among individuals born between 1963 and 1977. Regarding treatment, four studies suggested that clearing the infection with antibiotics could reduce bowel cancer risk, though this effect may only appear after 10 years.
