Tamil Nadu CM Vijay Postpones Bengaluru Visit Amid Cauvery Dispute and Political Tension

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay has agreed to postpone a scheduled visit to Bengaluru after Karnataka Chief Minister D K Shivakumar requested the deferral. The visit was intended to discuss the ongoing inter state dispute over the release of Cauvery river water. Shivakumar stated that the postponement was necessary because emotions were running high in Karnataka, where farmers have protested the Cauvery Water Management Authority's directive to release water to Tamil Nadu. Shivakumar described Vijay as a courageous leader and noted that the two should meet in a more cordial atmosphere.

While center right framing emphasizes the diplomatic cooperation between the two leaders and the environmental challenges facing Karnataka, center framing highlights a shift toward political confrontation within Tamil Nadu. According to reports from center leaning sources, R Nirmalkumar, a senior minister under Vijay, launched a sharp attack on Shivakumar. Nirmalkumar alleged that the Karnataka Chief Minister takes instructions from DMK leader M K Stalin and the DMK family rather than his own party leadership. This follows a period where the Tamil Nadu government had sought direct dialogue, but the failed meeting has led some TVK leaders to suggest the outreach yielded little result.

In Karnataka, the water crisis is acute. Shivakumar reported that the state has received only about 35 percent of its normal rainfall this year. He noted that while some water has been released to fill lakes and tanks for drinking purposes, it has not been used for irrigation. Protests in Karnataka have escalated to the point where demonstrators tore posters of Vijay's film Jananayagan and forced some theaters to stop screenings. Shivakumar also mentioned the Mekedatu Balancing Reservoir project as a potential long term solution, claiming it would primarily benefit Tamil Nadu.
