Tamil Nadu Political Parties Clash Over Delimitation Meeting Boycott

Political tensions rose in Tamil Nadu following a meeting of state MPs called by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay on Saturday to discuss the impact of a potential delimitation exercise. The meeting was boycotted by several major parties, including the DMK and AIADMK, leading to sharp criticism from Congress leaders. P. Chidambaram stated that the state lost an opportunity to demonstrate a consensus to the world, while TNCC president B. Manickam Tagore described the prospect of a fair delimitation as a fraud and a scam.

The DMK defended its absence by stating that delimitation should not be conducted at all. Party spokesperson Saravanan Annadurai argued that the freeze on delimitation should be extended for another 25 years and that Tamil Nadu's current political weightage of 7.2 percent of parliamentary seats must not be diluted. The AIADMK characterized the Chief Minister's decision to reach out directly to MPs as political immaturity and theatrics, asserting that such actions bypass established organizational structures.

Congress representatives expressed concern that the delimitation Bill would suppress Tamil Nadu's voice in Parliament and increase the representation of north Indian states. B. Manickam Tagore argued that even a uniform increase in seats would widen the gap between Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh. Additionally, D. Ravikumar of the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi warned that increasing the total number of MPs to approximately 850 would render parliamentary debates meaningless. The BJP rejected these claims, denying that the delimitation exercise is a conspiracy against Tamil Nadu.
