Tanker Reports Explosions in Strait of Hormuz Near Oman

A tanker captain reported hearing two explosions while transiting the Strait of Hormuz near Oman, according to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO). The incident occurred approximately 16 kilometers southeast of Kumzar. The UKMTO confirmed that the ship and its crew are safe and that no environmental damage or leaks were reported. The agency reiterated calls for vessels in the area to exercise caution and report suspicious activity.

Iran has maintained de facto control of the strategic waterway since February 28. Iranian forces have fired upon ships that they claim did not follow authorized routes, while the United States has attacked ships traveling to and from Iran. The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) continues to support the passage of vessels through the strait.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei stated that a temporary agreement with Oman to manage maritime transit is in the final stages of review. He noted that the agreement does not guarantee security due to persisting factors, which he attributed to U.S. naval blockades and aggressive actions. Another official, Kazem Gharibabadi, indicated the agreed route could last between two and four months.

U.S. President Donald Trump stated that his priority is reaching a diplomatic agreement with Iran to avoid further military action. Speaking in Las Vegas, Trump claimed that Iran respects the United States and that conversations are ongoing, though he warned the U.S. is prepared to intervene if negotiations fail. He also mentioned that a large scale military operation was previously suspended after Iran signaled an openness to dialogue.
