Trade War Erupts Between United States and Canada Following Failed Negotiations

The United States and Canada have entered a heated trade war following the collapse of customs negotiations in late August. President Trump has imposed 50 percent tariffs on approximately 20 billion dollars of Canadian products and threatened to double tariffs on Canadian cars and parts to 50 percent starting January 1. President Trump further signed an executive order to rename Lake Ontario as Lake America.

Marie, Ontario, the local steel producer Algoma Steel has seen a decline in sales, leading to the shutdown of some furnaces and the loss of roughly 1,000 employees. In New York, a business called Half-Way House Freight Forwarding, which straddles the border, continues to operate despite the uncertainty. The business allows customers to ship items to a location that exists in both the US and Canada, though the owner expects some customers to stop ordering non essential items as tariffs increase costs.

Reporting on the conflict differs by political perspective.
