Trial Begins in Paris Over Deadly Channel Crossing

A trial has begun in Paris involving 14 men accused of smuggling migrants in a crossing that left at least 31 people dead five years ago. The defendants face charges including manslaughter and facilitating illegal immigration as part of an organized gang. Prosecutors allege the group used an overcrowded, uncertified, and substandard inflatable boat that lacked appropriate life jackets. One survivor testified that the life jackets provided were not inflatable and felt as if they were filled with cotton wool.

The victims were primarily Iraqi Kurds, though the group also included nationals from Afghanistan, Ethiopia, Egypt, and Vietnam, with ages ranging from seven to 46. Investigators identified smuggling networks from Afghanistan and Iraqi Kurdistan that organized the crossing from northern France. While most defendants are suspected smugglers, a center-right source reports that seven French army members are also accused of failing to provide assistance.

Approximately 114 civil parties, including the families of the victims, are participating in the proceedings. Testimony and court documents indicate that the boat capsized on November 24, 2021, after losing air. A UK inquiry later found that some deaths were avoidable and noted that a French naval vessel failed to respond to an alert from the UK coastguard. Despite numerous distress calls, the boat was not found for nearly 12 hours.
