Tropical Storm Lala left one person dead and more than 100,000 customers without power in Hawaii. The deceased was identified as a 90 year old woman who was reported missing in Naalehu and found on Monday. The storm weakened from a hurricane to a tropical storm on Sunday as it passed the state without making landfall.
Governor Josh Green stated that flooding and mud were more destructive than the wind. On the Big Island, approximately 100 homes were swept from their foundations. Remote communities in the southern end of the island were isolated due to debris blocking roads and failures in communication systems. The 911 emergency service was temporarily unavailable on the Big Island but was restored by Monday afternoon.
State Representative Jeanné Kapela reported that two cemeteries in Naalehu were washed out, leading to the dispersal of sacred ancestral remains. Governor Green requested that the public respect the deceased. Hawaiian Electric reported that the Big Island power transmission system suffered extensive damage after winds took down utility poles and transmission towers.
Public schools and state offices statewide were closed Monday, with some closures continuing on the Big Island through Tuesday. The storm was forecast to move westward and potentially regain hurricane status at sea by Wednesday.
