Trump Scales Back US South Korea Military Exercises

President Donald Trump has ordered a significant reduction in the scale and duration of the annual Ulchi Freedom Shield military exercises with South Korea. The maneuvers, which typically involve tens of thousands of soldiers, saw US participation cut by half. Trump stated on Truth Social that the exercises send a hostile signal and cost the United States too much money. Reports indicate the reduction was intended to avoid upsetting North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, with whom Trump wishes to meet again.

The exercises were originally scheduled to run until the 27th, but ended on the 21st. According to reports from Japan, the latter half of the drills, which focused on counterattack operations, was cancelled, and some field training exercises were reduced or stopped. South Korean President Lee Jae-myung expressed agreement with Trump that South Korea should take more responsibility for its own security, pledging to increase defense spending to 3.5 percent of the GDP. Lee also described the decision to reduce the exercises as a step toward creating peace on the peninsula.

Analysts note that these exercises are critical for South Korea to regain wartime operational control of combined forces, a goal Lee aims to achieve by 2030. While the South Korean president maintains that the country is capable of defending itself, some experts warn that the reduction undermines deterrence against North Korea and potentially China.
