A seven year old girl and her 34 year old aunt died in a house fire in Grangetown, near Middlesbrough, an inquest heard. The victims, identified as Valentina Foster and Natalie McDonald, died from the effects of fire following a blaze on Birchington Avenue on 26 August. Teesside coroner Paul Appleton stated that members of the public attempted to rescue the victims before the Cleveland Fire Brigade arrived.
Jaden Wright, 23, has appeared at Teesside Crown Court charged with two counts of murder and additional offences related to other people injured in the blaze. Due to these criminal proceedings, the coroner suspended further inquest hearings.
Ms. McDonald's family described her as the heart and soul of the community, noting she had been married for nine months. Valentina's family described her as deeply loved and missed beyond words.
