Man Charged with Murder Following Fatal House Fire Near Middlesbrough

Jaden Wright, a 23 year old man of no fixed address, has appeared in court charged with murder following a house fire in Grangetown, near Middlesbrough. The blaze occurred at Birchington Avenue at 5.23am on 26 August and resulted in the deaths of 34 year old Natalie McDonald and her seven year old niece, Valentina Foster. Four other people were injured in the incident.

During a hearing at Teesside Magistrates Court that lasted less than two minutes, the court clerk stated that Wright faces two murder charges, two counts of grievous bodily harm with intent, and two charges of attempted grievous bodily harm with intent. These charges relate to the six people who were inside the house. Additionally, Wright faces a separate charge of intentional strangulation alleged to have occurred the day before the fire. He was remanded in custody to appear before Teesside Crown Court on Thursday.

Regarding the injured, Cleveland Police reported that a 48 year old woman remained in critical but stable condition at the Royal Victoria Infirmary, and a 27 year old man was receiving treatment at James Cook University hospital. Two teenage girls were discharged after suffering non life threatening injuries. A 31 year old man previously arrested in connection with the case was released without charge on Sunday.

Katie Smith, a senior investigating officer from Northumbria police, described the event as a truly tragic incident. Katie Nicolson, chief crown prosecutor for CPS North East, stated that prosecutors worked with police to establish sufficient evidence for the case, while reminding the public that the defendant has the right to a fair trial.
