Two workers died following an explosion at the Ritom hydroelectric plant in Piotta, located in the Canton of Ticino, Switzerland. The incident occurred on Wednesday morning shortly after 9:30. One victim has been identified as a 55 year old Swiss man from the Lugano region, while the identity of the second man is still being determined.
Authorities described the event as a serious industrial accident. The explosion took place at the old power station building, following reports of a fire inside the structure. A large scale rescue operation was launched, involving the Ticino Cantonal Police, the fire department, the Tre Valli Soccorso rescue service, and a Rega helicopter. A Care Team was deployed to support those involved.
The explosion caused damage to the plant infrastructure, though it remains unclear if the water supply or a nearby new construction project were affected. The Ritom plant was built in 1917 and provides water to the Canton of Ticino and electricity to the Gotthard line. It is operated by Ritom SA, which is owned 75 percent by SBB and 25 percent by Azienda Elettrica Ticinese. The local public prosecutor has opened an investigation into the cause of the explosion.
