Uber has launched the United Kingdom's first robotaxi service in London in partnership with the AI firm Wayve. The initial fleet consists of 15 Ford Mustang electric vehicles. Each vehicle must have a human safety driver behind the wheel who is ready to take control if necessary. The cars use Wayve's AI technology to analyze real time data from sensors to determine actions on the spot rather than relying on pre programmed routes.
Customers may see the self driving option in the app after booking a journey if a vehicle is available nearby. Fares for these rides are the same as standard UberX, Uber Electric, or Uber Comfort journeys. Uber's global head of autonomous mobility and delivery, Sarfraz Maredia, stated that the company plans to phase these vehicles in over several years and expects human drivers to remain on the platform for a long time.
