UK Government Imposes Temporary Ban on Disposable Barbecues Amid Wildfire Crisis

Prime Minister Andy Burnham has announced a temporary ban on the sale of disposable barbecues across Great Britain as wildfires continue to grip the country. The government stated that single use grills have caused several serious wildfires this summer and cannot be considered safe products given current drought and heatwave conditions. Retailers have been instructed to withdraw the items from sale both in store and online until further notice.

Speaking from Stourbridge in the West Midlands, where eight fires resulted in 19 people being hospitalized, the Prime Minister described Britain as a tinderbox. He reported that there are currently 37 fires across England and Wales, four of which are classified as major incidents. To combat the blazes, the government has deployed 100 military personnel to South Wales and is planning to commission aerial firefighting planes similar to those used in the United States and Europe.

Mr. Burnham stated that the country must face the changing climate and transition to clean energy. He also announced that emergency financial support is being planned for fire services, noting that the current infrastructure is not properly equipped to handle incidents of this scale. Weather data indicates this year has seen record breaking temperatures, including the first time on record that three separate days reached 37C.
