Darren Conway, a 52 year old man from Enfield, North London, has pleaded guilty to charges related to using an online forum to encourage the sexual assault of drugged or sleeping women. Appearing at Wood Green Crown Court, Conway pleaded guilty to nine counts of assisting or encouraging an offense, as well as charges of voyeurism and possessing an extreme pornographic image.
London's Metropolitan Police and the National Crime Agency (NCA) identified Conway as a member of an international online network where users shared videos of unconscious women being sexually abused. Evidence from digital devices seized during a July 30 search of his home revealed that Conway urged others to commit these assaults and encouraged them to share images of the acts. Police stated that Conway viewed images of sleeping women more than 10 times through the chat room.
Authorities described the case as part of a wider trend of organized online ecosystems where predominantly male perpetrators coordinate assaults and share imagery. Many victims are reportedly unaware they were assaulted until contacted by police. The Metropolitan Police and the chief prosecutor, Tracy Easton, characterized the acts as vile and shocking, noting that victims were put at risk in their own homes for Conway's sexual gratification.
Police are continuing to identify individuals seen in recovered footage, with victims believed to reside both in the UK and overseas. Conway is set to be charged on October 30.
