UK Nurses Report Collapsing Amid Extreme Heat in Hospitals

The Royal College of Nursing (RCN) has warned that nurses are collapsing during shifts due to inhumane and impossible conditions caused by extreme heat in UK hospital wards and care homes. Temperatures in some facilities have exceeded 30 degrees Celsius, leaving staff dizzy, nauseous, and dripping with sweat. Nicola Ranger, the general secretary and chief executive of the RCN, stated that hospitals and social care buildings are utterly unprepared for these temperatures and called for an urgent program to install air conditioning and improve ventilation.

Prime Minister Andy Burnham convened an emergency meeting of the government's Cobra committee to address the pressure on emergency workers and farmers. While Burnham focused on managing immediate crises, he declined to say if the heatwave made a case against renewed North Sea drilling. He did suggest that retailers should withdraw disposable barbecues from sale and mentioned a possible temporary summer ban.

Environmental conditions across the country remain severe. Three quarters of England is officially in drought, and firefighters are tackling a blaze in the New Forest. The Met Office warned that temperatures could reach 36 to 38 degrees Celsius on Thursday, with some rail operators advising passengers to travel only if vital. The Fire Brigades Union also warned that firefighters require new equipment to face threats from a rapidly changing climate.
