Ukraine and Russia Engage in First Recorded Drone Naval Battle

Ukraine has recorded the first naval battle in history between two drones in the Black Sea. The Ukrainian Navy released a video on Saturday showing a Sargan 3000 robot boat, equipped with a 12.7 mm machine gun, defeating an unidentified Russian drone. The Sargan model was first revealed in April. According to the Ukrainian Navy, military intelligence identified the target via an aerial drone before deploying the boat for combat. While Russia did not officially comment on the video, a Moscow based military analyst confirmed its legitimacy and noted that no previous battles of this type have been recorded.

Although the incident is a historical naval milestone, reports describe it as a minor detail in the broader conflict. Water drones have been used since the start of the war, but this event marks the first direct engagement between robots using artificial intelligence. The Sargan was developed for suicide attacks after the Ukrainian Navy suffered heavy losses. These drones have forced Russia's Black Sea Fleet to seek refuge in distant ports. According to the monitoring site Oryx, Russia has lost 25 ships and one submarine in the region due to missiles and drones.

The Black Sea remains a primary theater of war. Ukraine has targeted Russian grain ships leaving the Don river region, while Russia has retaliated against Ukrainian ports near Odessa. Preliminary estimates indicate a 75 percent drop in Ukrainian grain exports and a 60 percent drop for Russia. Additionally, Ukrainian attacks on Russian refineries have caused fuel supply crises in Russia, forcing the country to ban diesel and gasoline exports. In response, Russia has increased ballistic missile attacks on Kyiv and other urban centers, leading to the highest civilian mortality rate since the first month of the war.

On Sunday, Donald Trump spoke with President Volodymyr Zelensky by phone. Speaking to reporters in Ireland, Trump stated that he asked Ukraine to stop attacking Russian diesel. This follows mediation attempts last week involving envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, who met with both Putin and Zelensky. Future negotiations may take place in Abu Dhabi.
