Ukraine's Prosecutor General Suspended Amid Conflict with Anti-Corruption Agencies

President Volodymyr Zelensky has signed a decree suspending Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko from office. The Verkhovna Rada is scheduled to vote on Kravchenko's formal dismissal on September 15. The suspension follows a period of tension in which Kravchenko submitted his resignation on September 8 after anti-corruption agencies searched the Office of the Prosecutor General.

On September 14, Kravchenko announced that he had named Semen Kryvonos, the director of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU), as a suspect. Kravchenko accused Kryvonos of crimes including the use of falsified paternity documents to avoid punishment in a 2007 bribery case and the illegal allocation of a land plot in 2014. Kravchenko also charged an unnamed associate of Oleksandr Klymenko, chief of the Special Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office (SAPO), with bribing judges and helping conscripts evade the draft. Kryvonos has denied the accusations, stating he was never formally served with the charges and calling them fabricated.

Shortly after these announcements, Kravchenko left Ukraine in an official vehicle. While he claimed the trip was for official business to inform international partners about the state of anti-corruption agencies, reports indicate that conference organizers in Paris did not expect him to attend. Additionally, the Prosecutor General's Office later issued a statement claiming the reported charges were not true and had been canceled.
